History
In August 2021, the Governing Council of the Indian Premier League (IPL) initiated an invitation to tender for the addition of two new teams. Out of 22 companies that initially expressed interest, only six emerged as serious contenders due to the high base price set for the new franchises. Ultimately, the Lucknow franchise was secured by the RPSG Group, led by Sanjiv Goenka, with a winning bid of ₹7,090 crore (equivalent to ₹80 billion or US$1.0 billion in 2023). Following the acquisition, the team embarked on a process to select its name, with “Super Giants” being officially chosen in January 2022.
During the mega auction held in February 2022, the franchise made significant acquisitions of players. Key signings included KL Rahul, Quinton de Kock, Mark Wood, and Marcus Stoinis. Later in the same year, the franchise appointed KL Rahul as the captain and former Zimbabwean cricketer Andy Flower as the head coach. Furthermore, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir assumed the role of team mentor.
In the 2022 IPL season, the franchise performed well, securing third place in the group stage and earning a spot in the playoffs. They faced Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Eliminator match but were unable to advance further, bowing out of the tournament at that stage.
In the subsequent 2023 season, the team replicated their third-place finish in the group stage. However, they once again faced elimination in the playoffs, this time losing the Eliminator match to the Mumbai Indians.
