Highlights
Mumbai Indians have introduced Kwena Maphaka as the replacement for Dilshan Madushanka, who will miss IPL 2024 due to an injury. Maphaka, one of the youngest players in both domestic and overseas cricket scenes, carries forward the MI legacy of nurturing new and promising talents into high-performance cricketers.
At just 17 years old, South Africa’s Kwena Maphaka gained prominence during the U19 World Cup earlier this year, where he earned the Player of the Tournament accolade for his remarkable tally of 21 wickets. His performance stands as the highest wicket-taking record for a pace bowler in a single edition of the U19 World Cup.
Having led South Africa’s bowling attack to the semi-finals on home soil, Maphaka has already represented South Africa A and South Africa Emerging teams. His inclusion in the Mumbai Indians squad offers him the invaluable opportunity to learn and develop alongside seasoned bowlers like Lasith Malinga, the Bowling Coach, and Jasprit Bumrah.
Maphaka possesses the ability to generate significant pace and delivers a menacing bouncer that often unsettles batters. Having made his debut for the South Africa U19 team at the age of 15, he boasts experience from two U19 World Cups. Capable of reaching speeds of 140kph, his prowess in death bowling and yorkers stood out during the recent U19 World Cup.
Despite being in his final year of high school, Maphaka has showcased his talent across multiple sports, including tennis and hockey. He shares his alma mater, St. Stithians, with renowned cricketer Kagiso Rabada.
With a history of discovering and nurturing future stars, Mumbai Indians continue their tradition of identifying promising talents since their inception in 2008.
